OUTLINE OF THE SIMPLE, BASIC PHASES OF PRIMARY FIREARM IDENTIFICATION WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO REVOLVERS AND SEMIAUTOMATIC PISTOLS.
Abstract
AS WE ENTER COMPUTER AGE IN LAW ENFORCEMENT, IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT THE DESCRIPTION OF FIREARMS BE ACCURATE IN ALL RESPECTS. THE MAIN THEME BEHIND THIS HANDBOOK IS THAT PROPER IDENTIFICATION IS A MUST. TO ENSURE THE PROPER RECORDING OF A HANDGUN UNDER INVESTIGATION, THE PERSON TAKING THE DESCRIPTION MUST HAVE AT LEAST A BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF THE SEVEN POINTS OF THE PRIMARY PHASE OF FIREARMS IDENTIFICATION. THE SEVEN POINTS OF THIS SYSTEM ARE MAKE/MANUFACTURE/PROOFMARKS, TYPE, CALIBRE, SERIAL NUMBER, MODEL DESIGNATION, NUMBER OF SHOTS, AND BARREL LENGTH. BY USING THIS SEVEN POINT SYSTEM, THE READER CAN DETERMINE AND RECORD A REASONABLE AND ACCURATE DESCRIPTION OF ANY FIREARM. THE AUTHOR HAS CHOSEN A CROSS-SECTION OF HANDGUNS TO SHOW THE READER WHERE CERTAIN PERTINENT POINTS OF THE SEVEN POINT SYSTEM MAY BE FOUND. NUMEROUS CHARTS AND PHOTOGRAPHS ILLUSTRATE THE TEXT AND INCLUDE LISTS OF EUROPEAN AND AMERICAN MANUFACTURERS OF SEMIAUTOMATIC PISTOLS, REVOLVERS, AND NONAUTOMATIC HANDGUNS. THIS BOOK IS WRITTEN FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT PERSONNEL, LAWYERS, COURT OFFICERS, AND THOSE PERSONS LOOKING FOR A SIMPLE YET CONCISE AND ACCURATE METHOD OF IDENTIFYING AND RECORDING HANDGUNS. IT IS SPECIALLY DIRECTED TOWARD THE POLICE OFFICER WHO DOES NOT, NORMALLY ON A DAILY BASIS, HAVE TO IDENTIFY FIREARMS. (SNI ABSTRACT)
