This curriculum, which focuses on police handling of emotional situations, is designed as a guideline for performance objective-based law enforcement basic training developed as part of the California Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) system.
Abstract
This unit covers specific performance objectives including possible causes of citizen stress, psychological responses to victimization, symptoms of persons in crisis, and techniques for defusing crisis symptoms. Other topics covered in the curriculum include providing information to crime victims, directing qualified victims to State assistance agencies, analyzing the effects of hate crimes on victims, and recognizing behaviors indicative of potential hostility. Scenarios depicting various stressful situations are provided for instructional support. Additional materials and references to be used for instruction, remediation, additional reading, viewing, and instructor planning are provided.
