This 2002 Annual Report presents information about the organization and activities of the Hanover Park Police Department.
Abstract
Over the past 5 years, the Hanover Park Illinois Police Department has recorded a 44 percent decrease in Part I Crime. Despite this trend, between 2001 and 2002, there was a 3 percent increase in Part I Crimes; however, the Part I Crime rate is well below the 5-year average. There was a 5 percent increase in Part II Crime; the most significant increase occurred in Simple Assault and Damage/Trespass to Property. The two murders that occurred in 2002 were the result of gang activity, which was also on the rise in 2002. The major divisions within the Hanover Park Police Department, which has been fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies for 2 years, are the Patrol Division, Investigations, and Administration. Police activities that were highlighted in 2002 include traffic enforcement, residential code enforcement, and community crime prevention programs, such as DARE, and participation with Neighborhood Watch programs. During 2002, there were 306 Driving Under the Influence (DUI) arrests, which is the second highest number of DUI arrests in 5 years. Traffic citations increased 63 percent and parking tickets increased 19 percent since 1998. Code enforcement efforts in 2002 focused on parking violations, removal of illegal signs, weed abatement, and notification of time to remove holiday lights. Community crime prevention efforts in 2002 included participation in the Police and Children Together Camp. Highlights of significant cases and Police Department accomplishments are offered throughout the report. Narratives of the 2002 activities of the Hanover Park Police Department Special Units (Tactical, Crime Prevention, Intelligence/Crime Analysis, Canine, Crisis Resolution, Code Enforcement, and Social Services) are presented. For example, in 2002, the Tactical Unit served a search warrant on an apartment where 60 grams of cocaine and $5,800 in cash were seized. A section on Community Policing highlights the main community police accomplishments for 2002, including the COPS Days Picnics, Police and Children Together Camp, National Night Out Against Crime Celebration, and the Citizen’s Police Academy, which enrolled 23 students during 2002. Finally, the report lists the awards and recognition brought to the Department in 2002 and presents the new appointments within the Department. Figures
