As a new psychoeducational treatment model for antisocial youth, the EQUIP Program aims to integrate positive peer culture methods with training in moral development, anger management, social skills, and correction of cognitive distortions.
Abstract
Positive Peer Culture (PPC) programs strive to build prosocial group climates that enlisted young persons as primary agents in solving their own problems and those of peers. While the PPC approach is based on a youth empowerment model, it is not permissive. Students are expected to take full responsibility for their behavior and to help their peers through regular problem- solving groups. Techniques for developing a positive youth culture are discussed in relation to group development stages. Specific strategies for developing prosocial groups are described that focus on reversing responsibility, confronting with concern, checking, relabeling, solving problems, and turning bullies into positive leaders. The EQUIP Program uses a Problem and Thinking Errors Log and two different meeting structures, one for problem- solving and the other for teaching a range of social, moral, and cognitive skills. The EQUIP Program also has a spiritual dimension. 13 references and 1 illustration
