SENIOR LAW STUDENTS FROM HARVARD GAINED CLINICAL EXPERIENCE IN PROSECUTING ACTUAL CRIMINAL CASES BY LITIGATING FOR THE MASSACHUSETTS DISTRICT ATTORNEY.
Abstract
EVALUATION OF THE FIRST YEAR OF THE PROJECT FOUND THAT THE CRIMINAL COURTS, PROSECUTORS' OFFICES, AND POLICE DEPARTMENTS COLLECTIVELY PROVIDE A VALUABLE SOURCE OF EXPERIENCE IN THE ADMINISTRATION OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE. OFFICIALS AT THESE INSTITUTIONS WERE COOPERATIVE AND LAW STUDENTS SHOWED AN INTEREST IN SUCH PROGRAMS EVEN THOUGH NO LAW SCHOOL CREDIT WAS GIVEN. PARTICIPATION BY LAW STUDENTS IN THE TRIAL OF CASES ON BEHALF OF THE PROSECUTION WAS SUFFICIENTLY EFFECTIVE SO THAT THE OVER-ALL WORK OF THE INSTITUTION WAS NOT HINDERED. THE STUDENTS PROVED TO BE OF CONSIDERABLE HELP. THE PAPER SUGGESTS THAT SUCH LAW STUDENT PROSECUTOR PROGRAMS WILL PRODUCE LAW STUDENTS TRAINED AND QUALIFIED TO STEP INTO PROSECUTORS' OFFICES UPON GRADUATION. APPENDED MATERIAL INCLUDES A SERIES OF LECTURES BY THE ASSISTANT ATTORNEY GENERAL OF MASSACHUSETTS ON PROSECUTING CRIMINAL CASES IN THE STATE DISTRICT COURTS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
