This report provides comprehensive statistical data on the prevalence and trends of hate crime, as well as prosecutorial information related to hate crime for California in 2006.
Abstract
Highlights of the report findings include: (1) hate crime events decreased 6.5 percent from 1,397 in 2005 to 1,306 in 2006; (2) the number of victims of reported hate crimes decreased 1.8 percent from 1,640 in 2005 to 1,611 in 2006; (3) sexual orientation hate crime events decreased 3.5 percent from 255 in 2005 to 246 in 2006; (4) anti-African-American hate crime events decreased 11.8 percent from 490 in 2005 to 432 in 2006; (5) violent crime offenses decreased 4.7 percent from 1,096 in 2005 to 1,044 in 2006; (6) a total of 363 hate crime cases were referred to prosecutors; and (7) race/ethnicity/national origin hate crime offenses have consistently been the largest bias motivation category of hate crimes since 1997 followed by sexual orientation and then religion. The California Attorney General’s Hate Crime Reporting Program was implemented in 1994 with agencies required to identify and submit all reports of hate crimes. In 1995, hate crime prosecutorial information began to be reported. Each crime report submitted includes information about, but not limited to, bias motivation, type of crime, location of crime, number of victims, and the number of known suspects.
