This Annual Report of the Hawaii County Police Department for fiscal year 2001-2002 presents data and information pertinent to the department's activities and accomplishments.
Abstract
The department's mission statement is followed by a presentation of the names and photographs of the department's administrative staff, along with an organizational chart. The department has made substantial progress in the construction of a police cell-block facility in Hilo, the upgrading of its microwave radio system, and the acquisition of a new records management system. The department has continued to lead the State in clearance rates for all categories of Index crimes, and its Traffic Enforcement Unit was again awarded for its efforts to reduce drunk driving. Vice officers made important drug arrests and broke up a major drug smuggling ring from Mexico. Information is provided on police recruit classes and district police stations. Information and data are also provided on department retirements and promotions, as well as employment and budget. Statistical tables and charts address offenses known to police; clearances; number of persons charged by offense and dispositions; adult and juvenile crime Index offenses; a 6-year comparison of juvenile arrests in the county; and statistics on traffic offenses, traffic accidents, and traffic-related deaths.
