VOLUNTEERS' EVALUATION OF THEIR PLACEMENT AND PARTICIPATION IN PROGRAMS FOR INMATES IN HAWAII'S CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES IS DOCUMENTED.
Abstract
THE REPORT OUTLINES THE PURPOSES AND METHODS OF THE EVALUATION, PRESENTS A QUESTION-BY-QUESTION SUMMARY OF THE VOLUNTEERS' RESPONSES, AND DRAWS CONCLUSIONS ABOUT THE VOLUNTEER PROGRAM. ALL CORRECTIONS VOLUNTEERS ON OAHU (WITH THE EXCEPTION OF RELIGION VOLUNTEERS AT THE STATE PRISON) WERE ASKED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE EVALUATION; 51 VOLUNTEERS (36.2 PERCENT) RESPONDED. THE VOLUNTEERS' RESPONSES REGARDING THEIR RAPPORT WITH STAFF SUPERVISORS AND THEIR ACTUAL WORK ARE POSITIVE. THE VOLUNTEERS SEE ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT IN CERTAIN AREAS OF MANAGEMENT (JOB DESCRIPTIONS, STAFF DEVELOPMENT, PARTICIPATORY DECISIONMAKING). PLANS TO REFLECT THE EVALUATION FINDINGS IN TRAINING PROGRAMS AND IN STAFF POLICIES AND PROCEDURES ARE NOTED. TABULAR DATA, A COPY OF THE EVALUATION QUESTIONNAIRE, AND OTHER SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS ARE APPENDED. SUPERVISORS' AND CORRECTIONAL STAFF MEMBERS' EVALUATIONS OF THE VOLUNTEER PROGRAM ARE REPORTED IN NCJ-48945 AND 48946.
