The Annual Report of the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) for Fiscal Year 2006-2007 presents information and data on HPD activities, finances, personnel recruitment and training, and known crime.
Abstract
A feature story on HPD's training reports on the training structure and requirements and provides a partial listing of the courses that were completed. A second feature story reports on Hawaii County's new wireless enhanced 911 system that was launched in April 2007. Previously, police and fire dispatchers receiving 911 calls from cellular phones could only determine the name of the cell phone's wireless carrier, but not the name or location of the caller. Using what is known as Phase II technology, dispatchers can now obtain the latitude and longitude of the cell phone's location. A third feature story describes a recruitment video produced by HPD that highlights the benefits of living on the island of Hawaii and working as a police officer. The fourth feature story describes HPD's creation of a local version of the national television show, "America's Most Wanted" called "Hawaii Island's Most Wanted." HPD began producing monthly programs in February 2007, airing them several times a week on public access television at no cost to taxpayers. As a result, HPD has received numerous tips on wanted individuals, with some leading to their capture. In addition to the four feature stories, information and data are provided on HPD's Community Policing Section, Internal Affairs Unit, the Administrative and Operations Bureaus, and the Criminal Investigations Division. Activities of the two area patrol districts are also reported, along with data and activities of the Traffic Enforcement Unit. Information is provided on grants received and the budget for fiscal year 2006-2007. Data are presented for violent and property crime for the years 1997-2006.
