THIS MANUAL IS DESIGNED TO SERVE AS A GUIDE FOR POLICE AGENCY TRAINING AND PREPARATION OF PERSONNEL FOR EMERGENCY/CODE THREE (FLASHING LIGHT AND SIREN) DRIVING.
Abstract
THE MAJOR PREMISE OF THE MANUAL IS THAT PROFICIENCY AND SKILL IN EMERGENCY BEHICLE OPERATIONS MAY BE ACHIEVED THROUGH A SERIES OF INCREASINGLY DIFFICULT, FINDAMENTAL DRIVING CONTROL PROBLEMS. ITS GOALS IS TO PROVIDE AGENCIES WITH A USEFUL TOOL FOR INITIATING IN-HOUSE EMERGENCY VEHICLE DRIVER TRAINING COURSES AT A MINIMUM COST IN PERSONNEL HOURS, MATERIALS, AND EQUIPMENT. THE MATERIAL IS PRESENTED IN FOUR SECTIONS. BASIC HINTS AND GUIDELINES FOR DEFENSIVE DRIVING, HIGH SPEED DRIVING AND PURSUITS ARE GIVEN IN SECTION II. SECTION III, FUNDAMENTAL DRIVING CONTROL PROBLEMS, PRESENTS IN DETAIL THE FUNDAMENTAL DRIVER LEARNING EXERCISES WHICH FORM THE BUILDING BLOCKS FOR A WIDE VARIETY OF COURSES DEPENDING ON EACH AGENCY'S PARTICULAR NEEDS. A RECOMMENDED INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAM, DISCUSSED IN SECTION IV, PRESENTS A TYPICAL COURSE SEQUENCE THAT HAS BEEN DEVELOPED THROUGH THE EXPERIENCES OF ACTUAL FIELD INSTRUCTION. THE SEQUENCE IS GRADUATED FROM BEGINNING LEVEL TO MORE COMPLICATED EXERCISES BY USING COMBINATIONS OF THE BUILDING BLOCK AND DRIVING CONTROL PROBLEMS OF SECTION III. ADDITIONAL REFERENCE MATERIAL AND INFORMATION ARE PRESENTED IN THE APPENDIX, SECTION VI. THE APPENDIX GIVES SUGGESTED LECTURE OUTLINES AND INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIAL WHICH MAY BE USED FOR ORAL PRESENTATIONS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
