This report presents data on the progress achieved over 5 years in the Public Health Services' Healthy People 2000 Program, whose goals are to increase the span of healthy life, reduce health disparities among Americans, and achieve access to preventive services for all Americans.
Abstract
The first chapter of the report highlights the three program goals and provides a summary report of progress on the objectives. Chapter 2 provides an overview of the progress in each of the 22 priority areas, and chapter 3 describes the activities of States in developing their own Health People 2000 objectives and the efforts underway by Healthy People 2000 Consortium members. The report shows that the United States is moving in the right direction on more than two-thirds of the national objectives for which data are available. One strategy for addressing child and adolescent substance abuse is through alcohol and drug education in schools. Alcohol and marijuana use among adolescents (aged 12-17) declined from 1988 to 1992, according to the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse; however, this survey detected an increase in the use of these two substances by this age group beginning in 1992. Drug abuse- related emergency room visits have increased and are moving away from the year 2000 target, as is the number of drug-related deaths, which increased in 1992 to 4.3 per 100,000 population. Because of success in reducing alcohol-related vehicle crash deaths, the targets already have been met for the total population and for people aged 15-24. Appendixes contain the Summary List of Healthy People 2000 objectives with 1995 revisions, as well as a history of the objectives development and a listing of the contributors to this process.
