Representatives of the U.S. Justice Department, mayors, and the National Association of Criminal Justice Planners discuss the resources available for State and local drug law enforcement under the Federal Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1986.

Abstract

The representative of the U.S. Justice Department is queried by committee members about the Reagan Administration's proposed cut in the amount of funds available for State and local drug law enforcement under the Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1986. The Reagan Administration proposes cutting the budgeted amount from $625 million to $300 million. The committee chairman argues that there is no indication that the threat of drugs has decreased nor that State and local law enforcement agencies have any less need for resources to address the drug problem. The mayors of New York City (Koch) and Charleston (Riley), along with a representative from the Los Angeles Criminal Justice Planning Office and the National Association of Criminal Justice Planners, argue for maintaining the promised $625 million. They also report that in the 5 months since the enactment of the law, no funds have yet reached any of their agencies. The representative of the Justice Department reports on the administrative progress in funneling the block grants to local and State governments.
