Using the first-person accounts of several current and former fire marshals in New York City, this book details the types of crimes they investigate, their investigative techniques, and their attitudes toward their work.
Abstract
The crimes include arson committed for insurance purposes, arson murders committed from motives of jealousy or revenge, fires started by juveniles, and burnouts sponsored by organized crime. The narrators detail the factors involved in deciding whether to initiate, continue, or end specific arson investigations; their interactions with other emergency personnel; the considerations involved in interviewing victims, witnesses, and suspects; and the details of specific encounters with suspects.
