This articles describes the way that juvenile delinquent immigrants from Morocco to the Netherlands present themselves strategically to Dutch society and how that impacts on the approach used to understand their behavior.

Abstract

This article discusses the individualistic differences in the Moroccan community in the Netherlands. This tendency toward individualism carries through to juveniles and their differences in behavior. For this reason, it is propounded here, it is necessary to pay attention to the individual responsibility of these young people in order for the Netherlands penal system to be effective and for the development of future research and theory on Moroccan crime. The authors review the types of criminal involvement of Moroccans, the manner in which that criminality occurs, and provides explanations for the high rate of criminality among Moroccan youth. It is concluded that Moroccan youth in the Netherlands use images in the Dutch society about the Moroccan society as an effective strategy in how they present themselves. This finding is important in that it points out how best to explain their deeds outside of the usual presented cultural explanations. A list of reference sources is provided.
