A STATEMENT OF AVAILABLE TECHNOLOGY AND AN ASSESSMENT OF AREAS FOR NEEDED SUPPLEMENTARY RESEARCH TOGETHER WITH CONSIDERATION OF THE PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF THIS TECHNOLOGY TO CONTROL HEROIN PRODUCTION AND DISTRIBUTION.
Abstract
THE PAPER DEALS WITH THE DETECTION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF ILLICIT OPIATES IN THE POPPY FIELDS, IN STORAGE OR TRANSIT, IN PROCESSING PLANTS, AND IN BODY FLUIDS OF NARCOTICS USERS. WHERE ILLICIT OPIATES ARE GROWN AND MANUFACTURED IS ALSO CONSIDERED. DESTRUCTION OF THE OPIUM POPPY, DEVELOPMENT OF DISEASE-SUSCEPTIBLE POPPIES, ADULTERATION OF HEROIN TO DISCOURAGE ITS USE, AND OTHER PROCEDURES TO MAKE HEROIN UNUSABLE ARE DISCUSSED AS METHODS OF CONTROL. THE APPENDIX IS A COMPILATION OF TECHNIQUES THAT MAY BE APPLIED TO THE DETECTION AND ANALYSIS OF HEROIN, MORPHINE, AND OPIUM. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
