A bomb threat simulator has been developed at the University of Houston that takes advantage of the latest interactive technology to teach in a new way, by placing students in a virtual situation and challenging them to find innovative solutions.
Abstract
The simulator program runs on a personal computer and has hundreds of files covering topics such as building search, evacuation, and re-entry. Training using the simulator is structured to accommodate varying levels of user knowledge and various end user needs. Sufficient randomness is built into the simulator's scenario generation so the same situation is not likely to be generated twice. After the scenario is generated, the simulator gives the user information on past bomb threats, and the user has an opportunity to clarify information or to obtain additional details. Procedures associated with using the simulator are described, and the usefulness of the simulator as a training tool is discussed.
