This report of highlights from the 2018 Juvenile Residential Facility Census indicates trends in correctional facilities where youth are placed and the screenings provided for the years 2000 - 2018.
The data indicate that the proportion of locally operated facilities has increased steadily since 2000; however, the proportion of private facilities has decreased. The proportion of juvenile residential facilities that screen all youth for suicide risk increased substantially between 2000 and 2018. The number of deaths in juvenile residential facilities has decreased since 2000, with suicide being the most common cause of death in most years. Since 2010, locally operated juvenile facilities have held more juvenile offenders than have state-operated facilities. Most juvenile residential facilities reported screening all or some youth for service needs within one week of admission.
