The High/Scope Young Children First Project is one of nine 3-year initiatives funded by Great Britain's Home Office to stimulate innovative local responses to crime problems.

Abstract

Developed in the United States, the High/Scope preschool curriculum is based on a cognitive approach that emphasizes active learning as a central process. The approach involves physical interaction with the environment, the expression of choices, and verbal and physical support by adults and views intrinsic motivation as a powerful influence on learning. A consistent daily routine is part of High/Scope to provide children with security, promote increasing awareness, and control the passage of time. During the plan-do-review sequence of High/Scope, children initiate their own learning by developing and implementing plans and recalling and reflecting on what they have done. The role of the adult is to be a resource to the children, parental participation is strongly encouraged, and effective team work is encouraged. Several key features have contributed to the success of projects such as Young Children First, including information exchange, use of time, and staff training. 17 references, 2 tables, and 1 figure
