Abstract
Research reveals that many children in the United States start to use alcohol at very early ages; 8.4 percent begin as early as sixth grade. By age 18, about 53 percent of Cuban-American youths, 46 percent of Puerto Rican youths, and 50 percent of Mexican-American youths have used alcohol. In New York City's Hispanic communities, school counselors and teachers note that some children aged 10-12 come to school high on wine coolers, beer, and wine. Prevention at home is a long-term process. Parents should avoid inappropriate alcohol use. Family communications, provision of information, and recognition of media and peer influences on behavior are also important. Several sources of outside information are also available and useful. 15 references
