Following a summary of research into occupational stress among police officers and stress management strategies, the utility of increased spirituality, through a police chaplains program, is described; and one such program, 'Officer Alive!,' is presented.
Abstract
The review of police stress identifies common sources of job stress and those unique to law enforcement, the results of stress (e.g., isolation, divorce, depression, and physical reactions), and coping methods, including formal stress reduction programs and informal supports. A biblical explanation of officers' motivation to enter and remain in law enforcement careers is presented. The role of spirituality in law enforcement work is considered, and the role of the police chaplain and his training are delineated. Police chaplaincy then is compared to military, prison, and hospital chaplaincy programs, with an emphasis on first amendment issues. A national overview of police chaplain programs is provided, together with their history and organizational structure. The description of the Officer Alive! program includes its development, organization, goals and objectives, and impact. The focus of the program is to help meet the life needs of Washington County, Oreg. police officers and their families through pastoral counseling and the provision of other educational, referral, social/recreational, and ecumenical religious services. Appendixes include additional information on the program's administrative structure, policies, development and evaluation materials, incorporation, and development of management systems and future facilities. A bibliography contains 32 references.
