FROM ITS HUMBLE BEGINNINGS OF BACK OFFICES IN THE BASEMENTS OF MAINTENANCE BUILDINGS, CAMPUS SECURITY HAS COME INTO ITS OWN AS A POLICY-MAKING, INFLUENTIAL PART OF MODERN COLLEGE CAMPUSES.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR BELIEVES THAT THE 'POLICE DEPARTMENT MODEL' OF A CAMPUS SECURITY FORCE IS AS IMPROPER AS A DOOR-CHECKING WATCHMAN-TYPE OPERATION. CAMPUS SECURITY REQUIRES A COMPLEMENT OF WELL-EDUCATED AND WELL-TRAINED OFFICERS WHO HAVE THE ABILITY TO MIX WITH STUDENTS WHILE NOT ALIENATING THEM TOO MUCH. FOR PART TWO SEE NCJ-35371.
