This book examines the causes of prison riots and other correctional violence.
Abstract
The book addresses the marked increase in prison riots during the past several years, with particular attention to underlying causes and so-called “trigger events” leading up to riots, and discusses recent theories regarding the causes of prison violence. It looks at psychological and sociocultural risk factors for the development and expression of aggression, violence and criminal behavior. In addition, it considers biological determinants of behavior and a subfield of biopsychology known as behavioral genetics, which has provided evidence for an inherited predisposition for the ultimate development and expression of many behavioral traits and behavioral disorders. Today’s inmates tend to be youthful males with a history of parental neglect or abuse, substandard education, exposure to inappropriate role models and with a lack of hope for the future and with a sense of injustice.
