This report presents information and articles on HIV/AIDS treatment within the correctional environment.
Abstract
The HEPP News report is a forum for correctional problem-solving and targets correctional administrators and health care professionals involved in the HIV/AIDS care. The report provides information on HIV treatment, efficient approaches to administering HIV treatment in a correctional setting, national and international news related to HIV in prisons and jails, and changes in correctional care that impacts HIV treatment. In this issue of the HEPP News, two articles are featured with the first article providing recommended components for successful public health and correctional collaborations related to HIV care and suggestions on the types of programs that might be implemented in correctional settings. The second is a special report on the state of correctional health care at the end of the millennium, as well as the challenges for the future, focusing on HIV/AIDS, STD's, TB, hepatitis C, and mental illness. It is a reprint of a speech given by Dr. Newton Kendig, Medical Director for the Federal Bureau of Prisons during the 1999 National Conference on Correctional Health Care held in Florida. In addition to the featured articles, information is presented on new initiatives within the Massachusetts Department of Corrections and Department of Health and guidelines for stopping Prophylaxis or Maintenance Therapy in patients with HIV infection who have responded to a HAART therapy regimen.
