Abstract
The program is intended for public agencies, private nonprofit organizations, and interested individuals in California. It focuses on drunk driving, Neighborhood Watch, alcohol and substance abuse in schools, child safety, bicycle safety, and retail security. The program includes a holiday merchant's guide to deal with shoplifting and robbery and information on credit card precautions. California's Drunk and Drugged Driving Awareness Week is held in December during the holiday season. The goal during this week is to reduce the number of injuries and fatalities caused by alcohol and other drug-related accidents. Statistics on holiday crimes such as burglary, robbery, and shoplifting and on the incidence of drunk driving in California are provided. These statistics show there were 96,424 reported robberies in California during 1989. The month of December had the greatest number of robberies with 9,044. In 1989, there were 175,550 reported shoplifting offenses in California, with the value of property estimated at over $16 million.
