This 55-minute cassette for both citizens and community crime prevention officers explains the nature of residential burglary and proposes a three-way prevention program to reduce both risk and loss.
Abstract
The three strategies involve (1) concealing the target, (2) preventing entry, and (3) concealing and protecting property within the site. Individuals who practice target concealment should avoid listing telephone numbers, should use such devices as timers and radios to give houses a lived-in appearance when they are away, should allow as few people as possible to know about their vacations, and should lock up all ladders and tools. In addition, people can deter entry by installing second locks, securing windows, keeping dogs, and using the most appropriate burglar alarm for their residence. Finally, individuals can make entry unprofitable for a burglar by marking all valuable items with an engraving tool, by using safe-deposit boxes for currency and valuable documents, by concealing larger items such as silver, and by starting a neighborhood watch program to encourage neighbors to protect each other's property.
