This annual report presents the results of the 2006-07 National Homicide Monitoring Program which monitors trends and patterns of homicide in Australian jurisdictions.
Abstract
Major findings from this report found that for the period July 1, 2006, through June 30, 2007, and the previous 5 years, homicide rates in Australia had fallen by one third; almost 70 percent of the victims and 80 percent of the offenders of homicides were males; females were victims of homicide at a greater rate than they were offenders of homicide; firearm homicides continued to decline, following a decade long trend; rates of intimate partner homicide remained constant for the period; the majority of the child homicide victims were killed by a parent (84 percent); 13 percent of homicides were committed in the course of another crime; and Indigenous men were 7 times more likely to be offenders than non-Indigenous men. Following a discussion of the role of the National Homicide Monitoring Program, the information in this report is presented in six primary sections: Homicide in Australia: Overall Trends; Victim Characteristics; Offender Characteristics; Life Circumstances of Victims and Offenders; The Homicide Event; and Indigenous Homicide.
