This article presents necessary investigative strategies, specifically related to homicides in order to ensure efficiency and effectiveness in the gathering of facts and seizing of evidence.
Abstract
Today, investigators simultaneously must accomplish multiple tasks and quickly analyze information to seize the initiative and react timely and accurately to any given scenario. In this article, the fact-finding capsule, complemented by the investigative trilogy are presented and discussed as a necessary formula in the investigative demands associated with homicide cases today. In using the fact-finding capsule, several critical investigative tactics are used that include: a specific interview, a timeline documenting the witness’ or suspect’s physical location, what happened at those places over a time period necessary and germane to the case, and a well-documented statement. The prompt investigative trilogy has three particular areas: the specific focus (immediate), general coverage (immediate), and informative (pending). Each area must be addressed simultaneously during the investigation and direct information from all three areas to a central clearinghouse, such as the lead investigator or case agent. Following these protocols will help ensure the most efficient use of time in connection with the gathering of facts and the seizing of evidence.
