This bulletin presents statistics on crimes of homicide recorded by the police in Scotland in 1998, and the decade 1989 to 1998, as known at November 12, 1999.
Abstract
The report includes statistics on cases of murder and common law culpable homicide, but excludes figures for statutory homicide, that is of causing death by dangerous or reckless driving. Homicide data are given first in respect of cases, where a single case of homicide is counted for each incident involving murder or culpable homicide, irrespective of the number of perpetrators or victims. Information on victims and accused persons is then presented, followed by circumstances of homicides. The report also explores method, motive and relationship between the accused and their victims. In 1998 there were 100 victims of 98 homicide cases, which represents 19.5 victims per million population. The highest homicide rate was among males ages 16 to 29, with 60 victims per million population. For most of the 99 victims where accused persons have been identified, the main accused was known to the victim, 26 percent were presumed to have been killed by a partner or relative and 50 percent were presumed to have been killed by an acquaintance.
