Based on data obtained by Australia's biennial National Homicide Monitoring Program (NHMP), this study determined how many international visitors to Australia were homicide victims throughout 2008-09 and 2009-10.
Abstract
The number of homicides that involved international visitors composed of only 2 percent of all homicides in Australia during the period examined. Fourteen international visitors were homicide victims in Australia in 12 incidents throughout 2008-09 and 6 victims in 5 incidents in 2009-10. The number of homicide deaths of international visitors was estimated to be 0.66 deaths for every 1 million short-term visitors arriving in Australia in 2008-09 and 0.46 per 1 million visitors in 2009-10. The majority of the international visitors killed in Australia during these periods were killed by someone known to them at the time of the offense. Of the 14 international visitors murdered in 2008-09 and 2009-10, 2 were killed by an intimate partner (14 percent), 3 were killed by a friend or acquaintance (21 percent), 2 by an employer or landlord (14 percent); and in 2 cases, the relationship between victim and offender was unknown. In five cases, (36 percent), international visitors were killed by a stranger. 2 tables and 3 references
