Data on willful homicides by juveniles in Wisconsin from 1972 through 1983 cover the number arrested, adjudication, and offender recidivism.
Abstract
The study used Uniform Crime Reports records to identify all cases involving a juvenile court petition citing a willful homicide. County data were obtained primarily from county court case files. Some data were collected from police records. Institutionalization data were secured from the Division of Corrections, and data on subsequent arrests and convictions were obtained from the State Department of Justice identification records. In addition to data on the number of juveniles arrested and petitioned for willful homicide, the report presents offender statistics pertaining to demography, residence, education, and prior adjudications. Offense data cover weapons used, location, relationship of victim to offender, any precipitating offense, and accomplices. Processing data encompass waivers to adult courts, case outcomes, and sentences. Recidivism data were obtained only for those offenders who had time 'at risk' during the study period. The time at risk for the sample averaged 3.69 years. Recidivism data cover the number and type of offenses, sentences, and a comparison of new offense characteristics to the characteristics of the willful homicide offense. Tabular and graphic data, 3 footnotes.
