JUVENILE PROCESSING MODEL INDICATING A HOMOGENIZATION PROCESS WHEREBY YOUTHS ARE SORTED OUT OF A HETEROGENOUS POPULATION AND THEREBY PLACED INTO HOMOGENEOUS RESPONSE CATEGORIES AT DIFFERENT STAGES OF JUVENILE PROCESSING.
Abstract
IT IS SUGGESTED FURTHER THAT YOUTHS PLACED INTO SUCH CATEGORIES BEGIN TO TAKE ON CHARACTERISTICS, BEHAVIORAL RESPONSES, AND ATTITUDES WHICH THESE YOUTHS COME TO SHARE WITH ONE ANOTHER. MOREOVER, YOUTHS FROM LOW INCOME FAMILIES AND NONWHITES ARE MORE LIKELY TO BE RETAINED WITHIN THE SYSTEM AT EACH STAGE UNTIL WE REACH A RESIDUAL CATEGORY OF INSTITUTIONALIZED YOUTH, OVERWHELMINGLY NONWHITE AND POOR. SOCIAL FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE THIS PROCESS INCLUDE THE LEGAL SYSTEM ITSELF AND ITS BIAS AGAINST THE POOR, THE DIFFERENTIALS IN POWER AND THE ECONOMIC STRUCTURE, IN ADDITION TO COMMON SENSE NOTIONS ABOUT THE CAUSES OF CRIME AND DELINQUENCY PLUS STEREOTYPED IMAGES OF DELINQUENTS WHICH INFLUENCE DECISIONS BY CONTROL AGENTS. PROVIDED IS A CONCEPTUAL MODEL WHICH CAN AID RESEARCH EFFORTS IN THE FUTURE. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
