Abstract
THE REPORT OPENS WITH A STATISTICAL OVERVIEW OF THE PENAL POPULATION, INCLUDING DATA ON SUCH OFFENDER CHARACTERISTICS AS AGE, OFFENSE, TYPE AND LENGTH OF SENTENCE, EDUCATION, OCCUPATION, MARITAL STATUS, AND GANG INVOLVEMENT. A SEPARATE SECTION FOCUSES ON DRUG-DEPENDENT INMATES AND PRESENTS STATISTICS ON THE TYPES OF DRUGS USED, METHODS OF TAKING THE DRUGS, OFFENSE, AGE, AND ADDICTION HISTORY AND CAUSES. CROSS-TABULATIONS HIGHLIGHTING RELATIONSHIPS AMONG VARIABLES OF PARTICULAR INTEREST ARE INCLUDED. SEPARATE DATA FOR MALES AND FEMALES ARE PROVIDED THROUGHOUT. THE REPORT CLOSES WITH COMPARATIVE DATA ON CRIME PATTERNS, SENTENCING, AND PRISON POPULATIONS FOR 1976 AND 1977. NO INTERPRETATION OF THE STATISTICS IS PROVIDED, NOR ARE DATA SOURCES INDICATED. FORTY-SIX TABLES ARE INCLUDED. (LKM)
