This article examines the trend of police departments across the Nation to request the consultation of psychologists during hostage incidents and reviews the growing body of literature on the psychological aspects of hostage situations and negotiations.
Abstract
Who takes hostages and why, selection of negotiators, the role of the clinical psychologist as consultant, and victims' responses to being held hostage are among the topics reviewed in the existing body of literature. Theoretical explanations for the Stockholm Syndrome, psychological sequelae, and treatment suggestions after release also are reviewed in the literature. 28 references.
