IN LIGHT OF THE DECLINE OF ENTHUSIASM FOR HOSTELS, THIS ARTICLE DISCUSSES SOME CHANGES THAT HAVE REVITALIZED THE HOSTELS THAT HAVE IMPLEMENTED THEM.
Abstract
THE IMAGE OF HALFWAY HOUSES SHOULD BE CHANGED FROM A DEPRESSING, SHABBY AND LIFELESS PLACE TO A PLACE OF HEALING AHD HOPE FOR THE FUTURE. SECONDLY, HOSTELS SHOULD MAKE AN EFFORT TO STOP LABELLING ITS INMATES. THEY SHOULD ALSO GET AWAY FROM THE 'CONTAINMENT' PHILOSOPHY AND BE MORE INTEGRATED INTO THE COMMUNITY. THE ACCEPTANCE OF HOSTEL STAFF TRAINING PROGRAMS IS SEEN AS A GOOD DEVELOPMENT IN MAKING HOSTELS VIABLE ALTERNATIVES TO TOTAL INSTITUTIONAL CARE.
