Directed to police personnel who will be taking part in written assessment exercises for obtaining a promotion, this volume is intended to prepare for these assessment exercises or participation in an assessment center.
Abstract
The exercises simulate and evaluate a candidate's performance in situations common to certain positions in a police agency. Introductory guidelines emphasize that candidates are awarded points by assessors who must read something that demonstrates positive performance and who can take away points if they read something inappropriate. Therefore, candidates must find out as much as possible about the assessment exercises they will be taking and should study the appropriate sections of the book. Further guidelines explain dimensions as the crucial element in the scoring process; the principles of administration, supervision, and management in generic form; the most common forms of written assessment exercises; and the importance of time management in completing a written assessment exercise. The next section explains specific exercises related to scheduling, video simulation, report writing, the structured in-basket, and the unstructured in-basket. The final section presents practice exercises in each of these areas.
