ESTIMATES ARE GIVEN CONCERNING THE MAGNITUDE OF BAD CHECK OFFENSES, THE AVERAGE DOLLAR VALUE OF BAD CHECKS, THE AVERAGE COLLECTION COST PER CHECK, AND THE AVERAGE COST PER HOUSEHOLD PER YEAR FOR BAD CHECKS.
Abstract
IT IS ESTIMATED THAT BAD CHECKS TOTAL NEARLY 1.3 BILLION DOLLARS A YEAR, AND THAT NEARLY ONE PERCENT OF ALL CHECKS ARE BAD. DISTRIBUTED OVER THE NUMBER OF HOUSEHOLDS IN THE COUNTRY, THIS COMES TO 12.85 DOLLARS PER HOUSEHOLD PER YEAR. CONSERVATIVELY ESTIMATING THE COLLECTION COST ON EACH CHECK TO BE TEN DOLLARS, MERCHANTS SUSTAIN AN ANNUAL LOSS OF NEARLY 1.5 BILLION DOLLARS.
