The objectives of this study were to validate a French version of the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ) in a community of adolescents and to explore the relationship between regulation strategies, depression, and impulsivity in adolescence.
Abstract
The overall results of the study showed that the French adaptation of the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ) had good psychometric properties within a community sample of adolescents. It also confirmed that cognitive emotion regulation strategies predicted concurrent depression, and that emotion regulation mediated the link between depression and specific aspects of impulsivity. Future studies are recommended to find out whether emotion regulation also mediates these relationships. Emotion regulation has become an important topic for research on adolescence. The CERQ was developed in 2001 to assess strategies used by teenagers in response to negative events. It evaluates the cognitive and voluntary aspects of emotion regulation. This study of 116 students from a junior secondary school and 117 from a secondary school, located in the French speaking region of Switzerland sought to validate a French version of the CERQ.
