This handbook presents the key components in the development of a State Oral History Project (SOHP) for assistance to crime victims, which features a method of collecting and preserving historical information through recorded interviews with key participants regarding past events related to the history of crime victim assistance in the State, as well as perceptions associated with those events.
Abstract
The handbook consists of three major sections: "The Office for Victims of Crime Ortal History Project," "Developing a State Oral History Project," and "Key Planning and Implementation Issues." The section on the Office for Victims of Crime Oral History Project features the four goals of this project of the U.S. Justice Department's Office for Victims of Crime. In the handbook's second section, two components are discussed in the development of a SOHP: developing a clear mission and goals, as well as the development of a project framework. Suggested mission and goals are to provide historical context for the individuals and initiatives that contributed to the State's current victim assistance efforts; document key stages in program, policy, and protocol;; obtain input from the State's pioneers in the field; and build an archive for researchers, practitioners, and victim survivors. The discussion of the development of a project framework reviews the resources available for guiding the development of the SOHP. The Handbook's section on planning and implementation issues addresses the scope of the project, partnerships, budget, interviewees, site and scheduling, the interview process, technology, and establishing archives.
