This booklet guides school teachers in detecting various forms of child abuse and neglect, the logistics of reporting such abuse, prevention measures, and relating to abused children and their parents after reporting has occurred.
Abstract
Teachers are advised on how to recognize symptoms of physical neglect, physical abuse, emotional abuse, and sexual abuse. Guidance for teachers in validating suspicion of child abuse covers documentation, data analysis, consultation with other professionals, communication with the child and parents, and action options. A discussion of the reporting process reviews the content of State reporting laws, school reporting policy, and the logistics of reporting abuse suspicions to child protective agencies. Information pertinent to teacher involvement after reporting abuse pertains to protective agency decisions, court appearances by the teacher, and the teacher's role in helping the child and family after abuse has been established. A chapter covers the teacher's role in child abuse prevention, and the concluding chapter presents four selected papers pertinent to child abuse prevention programs and their evaluation. Appendixes contain supplementary information, a sample reporting form, and listings of selected resources and materials. 50-item bibliography.
