This booklet, designed to help nonoffending parents and siblings deal with child sexual abuse, acknowledges that child sexual abuse affects the entire family and that parents have many questions, concerns, and needs in common.
Abstract
The first section focuses on coping after disclosure, with attention paid to myths and facts surrounding child sexual abuse, long-term effects of sexual abuse, whether children are telling the truth, why children often go along with abuse, why children do not tell their parents sooner, and appropriate responses to child sexual abuse. The second section deals with therapy and recovery by examining such issues as counseling, homosexuality, ways to improve child safety in schools, and behaviors related to sex and sexuality in young children. Other sections discuss involvement of the legal system in child sexual abuse cases, child protective services, sex offender prosecution, and reasons why people molest children. A list of additional reading materials is provided. 1 table and 2 photographs
