This fifth in a series of six videos on how to use six parenting skills to help keep kids safe from alcohol, other drugs, and violence focuses on how parents can teach their children to deal with angry feelings without resorting to acting them out in violent behavior.
Abstract
The video uses a cartoon format to portray typical conflicts between children and their siblings and friends as well as parents, conflicts that stimulate angry feelings that can lead to verbal and physical attacks. The cartoon portrayals also present instructive conversations between parents and their children that can guide parents in proper ways to help their children deal with angry feelings in appropriate and nonviolent ways. The cartoon portrayals are reinforced by narrators' comments about the skills and principles being taught. The video promotes the A-B-C-D method of handling anger. "A" involves being "aware" of angry feelings; "B" consists of "backing-off" and sorting out what is really happening; "C" is "checking out choices" and the "consequences" of each choice; and "D" is "deciding and doing" the safest thing. A facilitator's guide accompanying the video provides material and guidance for conducting a discussion group with parents following the showing of the video.
