SELECTING THE PROPER BREED FOR THE TYPE OF WORK TO BE DONE, TRAINING THE WATCHDOG, AND TRAINING DOGS FOR SPECIALIZED POLICE WORK ARE COVERED ALONG WITH THE LEGAL RESPONSIBILITIES ASSOCIATED WITH OWNING A WATCHDOG.
Abstract
WRITTEN FOR THE SMALL BUSINESS OWNER, THE HOME OWNER, OR THE NOVICE TO DOG TRAINING, THIS BOOK EMPHASIZES THE PROBLEM OF DETERMINING WHAT JOB A DOG IS EXPECTED TO DO AND THEN GIVES STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS FOR SELECTING THE RIGHT DOG FOR THE JOB AND TEACHING HIM TO DO IT. WATCHDOGS CAN BE TRAINED ON THREE LEVELS -- THE ALARMSOUNDER, THE THREAT DOG, OR THE MANSTOPPER. THESE THREE FUNCTIONS ARE DIFFERENT FROM THE DOG CLASSIFIED AS A 'REAL ESTATE PROTECTOR.' THE REAL ESTATE DOG IS THE ONE MOST USUALLY ASSOCIATED WITH THE WORD 'WATCHDOG,' YET HE IS MEAN AND ROUGH AND HAS NO PLACE AROUND THE PUBLIC. SUCH DOGS SHOULD BE LEFT TO THE PROFESSIONAL HANDLER. INSTRUCTIONS ARE THEN GIVEN FOR CHOOSING A DOG TO PROTECT THE HOME OR SMALL BUSINESS. TRAINING IS EXPLAINED IN GREAT DETAIL. TEACHING THE DOG NOT TO ACCEPT FOOD FROM STRANGERS TO PREVENT POISONING IS COVERED. THE TRAINING OF DOGS FOR DETECTION WORK AND FOR SEARCH AND RESCUE IS DESCUSSED BRIEFLY. LEGAL RAMIFICATIONS OF OWNING A WATCHDOG ARE DETAILED. CHAPTERS ON GENERAL DOG CARE AND COMMON DOG DISEASES ARE INCLUDED. THE BOOK IS INDEXED.
