This study examined the impact of ethical dilemmas of California's changing cultural diversity on law enforcement.
Abstract
With the rapidly changing cultural diversity in California's population comes potential ethical conflicts with which police must cope. This futures-related research developed emerging trends and events that examined the desire to bridge the gap of understanding related to ethical dilemmas that face law enforcement in relation to cultural diversity. The study recommends that the consciousness of law enforcement personnel be raised to enhance their ethical conduct and likewise better understand the ethical conduct of the culturally diverse population that law enforcement serves. The author concludes that the involvement of community members in a cooperative, advisory team with law enforcement personnel will provide the guidance necessary for police managers to overcome the possible conflicts created by the ethical dilemmas posed within changing cultural diversity. In order to manage the transition, along with the anxiety and uncertainty that is prevalent during transition, several technologies and methodologies are recommended for transition management. These include responsibility charting, communicating a vision of the future, community surveys, a public forum, press releases, bi-monthly updates, accessibility of transition manager, resource allocation, and worst-case-scenario development. 44 references, a 29-item bibliography, and appended supplementary information
