This article presents an overview of the corrections system in the Republic of Moldova.
Abstract
Beginning with an brief discussion of the historical development of prisons, the author then moves into a discussion of the components of the modern correctional system in Moldova. The women’s penitentiary is described, including the daily schedule for inmates, the consequences of sexual relationships between inmates and guards, healthcare concerns, and escape information. In addition, the author discusses conditions unique to Moldova itself and the effect of those conditions on the operations of the prison, including the problem of power interruptions and the impact of those interruptions on food service. The author also provides information on the devastating consequences of the collapse of the Soviet Union on prison industry and corrections officers.
