This book discusses the full range of issues related to human aggression and, as a second edition published 15 years after the original manuscript, offers current and updated information.
Abstract
Following a chapter defining aggression and outlining various theoretical perspectives, the book discusses experimental and nonexperimental methods for the systematic study of aggression, the development of aggressive behavior in terms of acquisition and cognitive influences, social determinants of aggression (frustration, verbal and physical attack, target characteristics, and instigation from others), and external determinants of aggression. Individual determinants of aggression include personality, attitudes, and gender, while biological bases of aggressive behavior seem to lie in hormones, the central nervous system, and sex chromosome abnormalities. The final two chapters address aggression in natural settings and the prevention and control of human aggression. Some of the new topics introduced into this edition include regulators of aggressive behavior, archival research, retaliation as a defensive strategy, the effects of air pollution on human aggression, and training in social skills.
