This text provides opportunities to examine the various human relations roles of the law enforcement officer through a series of case reports designed to facilitate role playing, role identification, and problemsolving.
Abstract
Seven sections cover major areas of law enforcement concern. The section on police and community relations examines such issues as neighborhood class differences, working with elderly citizens, abuse of authority, and effects of a police career on former friends. Cases in family and crisis intervention examine the police social worker role, neighborhood mediation, wife battering, and other domestic disturbance situations. Police-juvenile cases examine such topics as incest, adolescent traffic violations, status offenses and police discretion, and petty crime by offspring of influential citizens. The section on emotional disturbance provides cases involving an intoxicated driver, an alleged rape victim, suicide, hostage situations, and false confessions. Family-job conflicts, use of deadly force, police discretion, and civil liability are highlighted in a section on occupational stress. Police corruption and ethics also are examined. Finally, administration and supervisory issues are examined in relation to relations with government, the chain of command, police strikes, discipline, and police physical fitness. Each case contains study questions, and section bibliographies are provided. See NCJ-108465 for instructor's manual.
