This second edition of a classic text surveys the current state of knowledge in forensic anthropology, covering not only the identification of human skeletal remains, but what to do when bones are discovered.
Abstract
New to this edition are detailed discussions on crime scene investigation, including the excavation technique, determination of time interval since death, physical and chemical methods, human or animal remains, burned bones, and preparation of the remains. Another new section on dental analysis examines such topics as dental anatomy, nomenclature, estimation of age, determination of sex and race, and dental genetics and congenital conditions. Other chapters acquaint readers with current concepts regarding skeletal age, determination of sex and parturition, assessment of racial affinity, calculation of stature, factors of individualization, restoration of physiognomy, and radiographic analysis. An overview of major age periods in the human skeleton, age changes recorded by decades, and the reliability of skeletal criteria conclude the text. Appendixes contain a brief anatomical overview of the human skeleton and its parts and pertinent information on osteometry of the skull, pelvis, and extremities. Tables, drawings, photographs, references, and indexes. (Publisher abstract modified)
