In 1984, legislation was enacted creating the Illinois State Enforcement Agencies to Recover Children (I-SEARCH), a comprehensive program designed to promote an immediate and effective response to the issue of missing and exploited children.
Abstract
The primary purpose of I-SEARCH is to prevent children from becoming victimized by molesters, abductors, or exploiters through public education programs. The program also seeks enhanced investigative efforts in identifying and finding missing and exploited children and the reintegration of the children With their families. Under the program, police, other criminal justice agencies, social service agencies, schools, and other organizations can receive State funding to work together in addressing the problem of missing and exploited children on a community or regional basis. In addition to investigative activities, program components include compilation of a data base for long-range planning, publication of educational materials, dissemination of information and photographs of missing children, school-based personal safety training programs, and psychological services for child victims and their families. The program has been expanded to six Midwest States, and an interstate agreement has been signed to encourage networking and program improvement. 5 footnotes.
