This document presents the results of a survey examining law enforcement's use of social media tools.
Abstract
Highlights from the survey include: 81.1 percent of law enforcement agencies surveyed use social media; 66.8 percent of agencies surveyed have a Facebook page; 35.2 percent of law enforcement agencies surveyed have a social media policy and an additional 23.2 percent of the agencies are in the process of crafting a policy; of the agencies not currently using social media, 61.6 percent are considering adopting its usage; and the most cited barrier to social media use by surveyed agencies were resource constraints (time and personnel). These findings are the result of a survey conducted by the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) in September 2010 to determine the extent of use of social media by law enforcement agencies. The survey was sent electronically to law enforcement agencies across the United States; 728 law enforcement agencies from 48 States and the District of Columbia responded to the survey.
