Imparting unique characteristics in plastics is possible in order to aid in differentiation for forensic examination.
Abstract
Plastics are complex substances that can share common traits depending on the similarity of production techniques. Searching plastics for patterning points the value of sequential analysis for this purpose. Used in court, visual techniques and powder enhancement provide the means to individualize a piece of plastic to a particular source. Under favorable conditions each type of marking could potentially be used as the sole method of identification. However, no one technique can reliably be expected to supersede another in the development of identifiable markings on plastics. The worth of any marking depends upon the cumulative strength of as many characteristics as may be attained. Each exhibit deserves careful observation to ensure maximum results. 9 figures, 1 table.
